I’ve done a lot of different writing jobs to have a full-time writing career in the past. I’ve been a ghostwriter, an article writer, a review writer, and of course, an SEO writer. I’ve even written a few resumes and cover letters.
There’s nothing wrong with any of those things. Except that they don’t make me happy.
I’m happiest when I’m making money writing the kind of articles and stories I truly want to write. Aren’t we all?
“But you have to make money writing somehow, so why not make money writing instead of at a regular job?”
That’s what I thought, too. For a long time that’s what I thought.
But twice, I’ve made enough money to stay home and just write and both times, I realized that writing for other people, writing articles that were purely for making money (especially when they are written to make other people more money than I was getting for it) made me miserable.
So, I’m not going to do that anymore.
I’m going to focus purely on writing articles that inspire me, that motivate me, that excite me - articles that get my creative juices flowing!
And I’m going to write stories and novels and poetry that feed my creative mind.
If they don’t make much money, or if they don’t make money at all, I’m ok with that. Why? Because I’m enjoying writing them.
It’s true what they say about turning a hobby into a job - changing the focus to money can make you miserable. That’s what writing for other people did for me.
In 2021 I wrote five novels. Yes, FIVE! For someone else. How much money did he make from them? I have no idea. I was just the ghostwriter so I don’t even know what titles or pen names they were published under. What I do know is I was seriously underpaid and writing them gave me huge amounts of anxiety.
In 2022 I won’t write so other people can profit from my hard work.
I WILL BE THE ONE TO PROFIT when I write something.
How am I going to do that?
- I’ll write and publish on Amazon and other ebook retailers.
- I’ll write and publish on Medium.
- I’ll write and publish on my own sites.
- I’ll write and publish on HubPages.
- I’ll write and sell on Constant Content.
Yes, I realize that selling on Constant Content is very much along the lines of letting others profit from my work, but when I put articles up for sale there, it will be articles I feel like writing. I’m still debating on how much I will sell there. Perhaps I’ll focus more on the other things. We’ll see how it goes and how I feel about it.
The bottom line is, I’m going to do this my way. And if I don’t like writing something, I’m not going to write it.
I will grow my writing into a full-time career again. But I’m going to do it my way.
